Check by means of a hydrometer

Direct method of check of the battery on a condition of a charge – the test by means of a high discharge which is carried out by means of the special exact voltmeter and expensive tool used in repair shops, but which is not recommended for car owners.

At a temperature of battery of 20 °C (electrolyte temperature):

    The battery is completely charged if the specific weight of electrolyte makes 1.280. The battery is charged half if the specific weight of electrolyte makes 1.220. The battery is almost discharged if the specific weight of electrolyte makes 1.150, and electrolyte is under the threat of freezing.

As the specific weight of electrolyte changes under the influence of temperature, if the temperature indicator does not correspond to 20 °C (68 °F), it is necessary to correct the indicators of specific weight (measured by means of a hydrometer) to 20 °C (68 °F) and to apply the received value of specific weight to the three-point specified value.

The method of adjustment can be seen in the schedule which shows the attitude of specific weight and temperature.

How to use the schedule of temperature correction of degree of a charge

Let's say the indicator of specific mass of electrolyte makes 1.28, and battery temperature — - 5 °C (23 °F). Choose on an axis "Temperature" value - 5 °C, and on an axis "The specific weight" - 1.28. Values will be crossed in a zone "A" (the shaded site on graphics). It means that the battery is charged.

To learn a condition of a charge of the battery, draw the direct, parallel lines of demarcation of zones, and continue it to the right until it is not crossed with a scale of percent. In this case, the line is crossed approximately in a point of 85% with a scale of percent. Therefore, the battery is charged for 85%.
