Steering column (at a cabriolet)

When the steering column is removed from the car, it is very easy to damage it. If to drop it vertically, the steering shaft can break or plastic pins which regulate column length can weaken; if to lean on it, it can be bent or deformed. Any of the listed damages can worsen udaropogloshchayushchy properties of a column. Weakening fixing bolts and nuts of a steering column, be convinced that the steering column and the lower steering shaft are disconnected. If before weakening of fixing bolts and nuts not to separate a steering column and the lower steering shaft, it can damage the bearing of the lower steering shaft. |

When carrying out service of a steering column or any knots established on it it is necessary to remove a steering wheel. But if the steering column is removed only to provide access to toolbar components, the steering wheel can be not removed from a column. |
Removal
|
|
Disconnect "minus" (–) a battery cable.
Remove a steering wheel and understeering switches if it is required. See in this Chapter Sections the Steering wheel and Understeering switches.
If the steering wheel and\or understeering switches remain on the place, execute the following manipulations:
Turn a steering wheel so that forward wheels of the car looked directly forward.
Turn the ignition switch in the provision of "LOCK" and take out a key.
Uncover a steering column (1).
Disconnect all cables of the following knots:
Contact spiral and understeering switches
Ignition switch
Elements of anticreeping system (if are available).

Apply docking tags (3) on the coupling of a shaft (2) (from a column) (1) that on them it is correct to establish into place.
|
Having unscrewed a bolt (4) from a column on the coupling of a shaft and having weakened a bolt (5) from the lower shaft, pull the coupling of a shaft (2) towards the lower shaft (as shown shooters in the drawing below).

Unscrew fixing bolts of a steering column (6 pieces) (2).

If there is a cable of blocking (1) of the switch (key), unscrew a bolt (2) cables of blocking of the switch (key), and then disconnect a cable from the ignition switch.

Remove a steering column from the car.
|

Installation
|
|
- After fixing bolts of a steering column are tightened, tighten bolts of the coupling of a steering shaft.
- After the lower bolts of a steering column are tightened, tighten the top bolts of a steering column.
|
|
|
Make sure that forward wheels and a steering wheel are in the situation corresponding to the rectilinear movement of the car.
If there is a cable of blocking of the switch (key), fix it on the ignition switch.
Install a steering column (1) on the panel (4) and the top fixture so that the thickening of the lower epiploon of a steering column (3) was projected through an opening in the panel in an engine compartment. Tighten at first the lower bolts of a steering column (2) (4 pieces), and then the top bolts (5) (2 pieces) of the specified value of the moment of an inhaling. Inhaling moment: a fixing bolt of a steering column — 23 N • m (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 pounds feet).

In an engine compartment.
|
|
|
Dress the coupling of a steering shaft (1) on a steering shaft (2), having combined the tags (3) put before removal.
|
|
|
Fasten a shaft coupling bolt (from a column) to the coupling of a steering shaft (1). At first tighten a shaft coupling bolt (from a column) (2) to the specified value of the moment of an inhaling, and then a shaft coupling bolt (from the lower party of a shaft) (3) to the specified value of the moment of an inhaling. Inhaling moment: a shaft coupling bolt — 25 N • m (2.5 kg-m, 18.0 pounds feet).

If understeering switches were removed, install them into place. See in this Chapter Undressed Understeering switches.
Connect all wires which were disconnected before removal.
Establish a cover of an opening of a steering column (1).

Connect "minus" a battery cable.
