Steering column (at not a cabriolet)

When the steering column is removed from the car, it is very easy to damage it.

If to drop it vertically, the steering shaft can break or plastic pins which regulate column length can weaken; if to lean on it, it can be bent or deformed. Any of the listed damages can worsen udaropogloshchayushchy properties of a column.

Weakening fixing bolts and nuts of a steering column, be convinced that the steering column and the top steering shaft are disconnected. If before weakening of fixing bolts and nuts not to separate a steering column and the top steering shaft, it can damage the top coupling and a fixing bracket of the top steering shaft.

When carrying out service of a steering column or any knots established on it it is necessary to remove a steering wheel. But if the steering column is removed only to provide access to toolbar components, the steering wheel can be not removed from a column.

Removal

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

Disconnect "minus" (–) a battery cable. Remove a steering wheel and understeering switches if it is required. See in this Chapter Sections the Steering wheel and Understeering switches. If the steering wheel and\or understeering switches remain on the place, execute the following manipulations:
Turn a steering wheel so that forward wheels of the car looked directly forward. Turn the ignition switch in the provision of "LOCK" and pull out a key.
Uncover a steering column (1).
Disconnect all cables of the following knots:
Contact spiral and understeering switches Ignition switch Elements of anticreeping system (if are available).
Remove a bolt (1) and a nut (2) of the top coupling of the top steering shaft.
Remove a steering column (1), fixing bolts (2 pieces) (2) and nuts (2 pieces) (3).
If there is a cable of blocking of the switch (key) (1), disconnect it from the ignition switch, having turned the ignition switch in the provision of "ACC".
Remove a steering column from the car.

Survey

Check serviceability of a steering column and existence of damages as it is described in this section in the head "Check of a steering column and top shaft of steering on existence of accident damages".

Installation

After tightening of fixing bolts of a steering column it is necessary to tighten bolts of the coupling of a steering shaft.

 PERFORMANCE ORDER

Make sure that the provision of forward wheels and a steering wheel correspond to the rectilinear movement of the car.
If there is a cable of blocking of the switch (key) (1), connect it to the ignition switch, having turned the ignition switch in the provision of "ACC". Then turn the ignition switch in the provision of "LOCK".
Combine a point of "A" of a steering column (1) with an opening of a nut of "B" of the top coupling of the top steering shaft. Then connect the top coupling of the top steering shaft.
Establish a steering column (1) by the contact top party of the lower vents to fixing bolts. Tighten the lower fixing nuts (3) steering columns, and then the top fixing bolts (2) to the specified values of the moment of an inhaling. Inhaling moment: fixing bolts and nuts of a steering column — 25 N • m (2.5 kg-m, 18.0 pounds feet).
Establish a bolt (2) of the top coupling of the top steering shaft and a nut (1). Tighten a nut (1) of the top coupling of the top steering shaft till the specified inhaling moment. Inhaling moment: a nut of the top coupling of the top steering shaft (a) — 23 N • m (2.3 kg-m, 17.0 pounds feet).
If understeering switches were removed, install them as it is described in this Chapter in the Section Understeering switches. Connect all cables which were disconnected at removal of a steering column.
Establish a cover of an opening of a steering column (1).
If the steering wheel was removed, establish it as the Steering wheel is described in this Chapter in the Section. Connect "minus" (–) a cable to the battery.
